Background of the Study
Access to clean and reliable water sources is vital for rural development, particularly in Nigeria's underserved regions. Gombe LGA, Gombe State, has implemented several water resource policies, including the drilling of boreholes to improve water access in rural areas. These policies are critical to supporting public health, agriculture, and local livelihoods. This study aims to assess the impact of these water resource policies, particularly borehole projects, on rural development in Gombe LGA.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the emphasis on water resource policies, many rural communities in Gombe LGA still face challenges in accessing potable water. The effectiveness of the borehole projects has been questioned, with concerns about sustainability, maintenance, and equitable distribution of resources. This study will investigate the impact of water resource policies, with a focus on borehole projects, on rural development.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the effectiveness of borehole projects in improving access to clean water in rural communities within Gombe LGA.
To assess the impact of water resource policies on health, agriculture, and local economies in Gombe LGA.
To identify the challenges faced in implementing water resource policies in rural areas of Gombe LGA.
1.4 Research Questions
How effective have borehole projects been in improving access to clean water in rural communities of Gombe LGA?
What impact have water resource policies had on rural development in terms of health, agriculture, and local economic activities?
What challenges have hindered the effective implementation of water resource policies in Gombe LGA?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
Borehole projects have significantly improved access to clean water in rural communities within Gombe LGA.
Water resource policies have positively impacted health, agriculture, and economic activities in Gombe LGA.
Sustainability issues and inadequate maintenance have hindered the long-term success of borehole projects in Gombe LGA.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide insights into the effectiveness of water resource policies in improving rural development. The findings will help policymakers and local authorities to refine water policies, improve the sustainability of borehole projects, and ensure better rural development outcomes.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on water resource policies in Gombe LGA, with particular attention to borehole projects. Limitations include difficulties in accessing data from rural communities and potential issues with the long-term data on borehole performance.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
Water Resource Policies: Government measures aimed at ensuring sustainable water supply and equitable distribution.
Rural Development: The process of improving the standard of living in rural communities through better infrastructure, health, education, and economic opportunities.
Borehole Projects: Projects involving the drilling of boreholes to provide rural communities with access to clean water.
